Organize Your Plex Library: Everything Matched Correctly

2026-10-13 · PlexBeam

Nothing kills the Plex experience faster than mismatched metadata — a movie showing the wrong poster, a TV show with episodes out of order, or media that simply doesn't appear in your library. Here's how to fix it permanently.

The Golden Rule: Folder Structure

Plex is opinionated about how your files should be organized. Follow this structure exactly:

Movies

Movies/Movie Name (Year)/Movie Name (Year).mkv

Examples:

The year in parentheses is critical — it's how Plex distinguishes between movies with the same name (like different versions of "Dune").

TV Shows

TV Shows/Show Name/Season 01/Show Name - S01E01 - Episode Title.mkv

Examples:

Pro tip: Use FileBot ($6 one-time) or tinyMediaManager (free) to automatically rename your entire library. These tools query TMDB/TVDB and rename files to Plex's expected format in bulk.

Common Matching Problems and Fixes

Wrong movie matched

Click the movie → "Fix Match" → search by title and year. If the correct match doesn't appear, try searching by TMDB ID or IMDB ID directly.

TV show episodes out of order

Usually caused by using absolute episode numbering instead of season/episode. Plex expects S01E01 format. Some anime series use absolute numbering — switch the metadata agent to "TheTVDB" and select absolute ordering in the library settings.

Media not appearing at all

Check: (1) The file is in the correct library folder, (2) the file format is supported (.mkv, .mp4, .avi — NOT .iso or .bdmv without extras), (3) file permissions allow Plex to read it, (4) scan the library manually (three dots → "Scan Library Files").

Metadata Agents in 2026

Plex's default "Plex Movie" and "Plex TV Series" agents work well for 95% of content. For edge cases:
