Plex’s Live TV and DVR feature turns your media server into a cord-cutting DVR. With a compatible tuner and antenna (or IPTV source), you can watch and record live broadcast television through the same Plex interface you use for your movie library. Here’s the complete setup and optimization guide.
Hardware Requirements
- Plex Pass — Required. Live TV/DVR is a premium feature
- TV tuner — HDHomeRun (network-attached, recommended), Hauppauge, or other compatible USB/network tuner. HDHomeRun Flex 4K for ATSC 3.0 support
- Antenna — For OTA broadcast reception. Quality and placement matter more than the tuner itself
- Storage — DVR recordings are large. Budget 3–8 GB per hour depending on resolution and whether you transcode recordings
Initial Setup
- Connect your tuner and verify it’s detected (HDHomeRun: visit its web UI at the device IP)
- In Plex, go to Settings → Live TV & DVR → Set Up Plex DVR
- Plex auto-discovers network tuners. For USB tuners, ensure drivers are installed
- Select your tuner and run the channel scan (takes 2–5 minutes)
- Choose your EPG (electronic program guide) source — Plex provides free guide data for OTA channels
- Map channels to guide data and enable the ones you want
DVR Recording Options
Once Live TV is set up, you can schedule recordings:
- Record single episode — One-time recording of a specific airing
- Record series — Automatically record new episodes as they air. Configure new-only vs. all airings
- Record movie — Record upcoming movie broadcasts
- Start/end padding — Add 1–5 minutes before and after to avoid cutting off content
- Commercial skip — Plex can detect and mark commercial breaks (Plex Pass, post-recording analysis)
Post-Processing Recordings
Raw DVR recordings are large MPEG-TS files. Plex can automatically transcode them:
- Settings → DVR → “Transcoder quality for DVR” — options from original quality down to mobile-friendly
- Transcoding to H.264 at a reasonable bitrate typically reduces file size by 50–70%
- Commercial detection runs automatically after recording and before transcoding
- If you have a PlexBeam GPU transcoding setup, DVR post-processing is dramatically faster
IPTV Integration
Plex doesn’t natively support IPTV, but tools bridge the gap:
- xTeVe — Creates a virtual HDHomeRun device from M3U playlists. Plex sees it as a standard network tuner
- Dizquetv / ErsatzTV — Create custom “channels” from your existing library content, complete with scheduling and filler
- XMLTV guide data can be imported for channel mapping
Tuner Recommendations
- HDHomeRun Flex 4K — Best overall. 4 tuners, ATSC 1.0 and 3.0, network-attached, works with any server OS. ~$200
- HDHomeRun Flex Duo — Budget pick. 2 tuners, ATSC 1.0 only. ~$100
- Hauppauge WinTV-dualHD — USB, 2 tuners, works on Linux with some setup. ~$60
- Xbox USB tuner (Hauppauge) — Cheap, single tuner, widely compatible. ~$30
Antenna Tips
Your antenna setup matters more than your tuner:
- Use AntennaWeb or RabbitEars to see what channels are available at your location and what antenna type you need
- Outdoor/attic-mounted antennas dramatically outperform indoor ones
- Amplified antennas help with weak signals but can overload if you’re close to broadcast towers
- Coax quality matters — use RG6 for runs over 25 feet
