Plex is only as good as your library organization. A well-structured library means instant, accurate metadata matches for every movie and TV show. A poorly organized one means hours of manual fixes, missing posters, wrong descriptions, and episodes showing up under the wrong show. Here’s how to do it right.
The Golden Rule: One Folder Per Item
Every movie and every TV show gets its own folder. No exceptions. No dumping 500 movies loose in a single directory.
Movies:
/Movies
/The Dark Knight (2008)
The Dark Knight (2008).mkv
/Inception (2010)
Inception (2010).mkv
/Dune Part Two (2024)
Dune Part Two (2024).mkv
TV Shows:
/TV Shows
/Breaking Bad
/Season 01
Breaking Bad - S01E01 - Pilot.mkv
Breaking Bad - S01E02 - Cat's in the Bag.mkv
/Season 02
Breaking Bad - S02E01 - Seven Thirty-Seven.mkv
Naming Conventions
Plex uses file and folder names to match against metadata databases (TMDB for movies, TVDB/TMDB for TV). The format matters:
- Movies:
Movie Name (Year).ext— the year in parentheses is critical for disambiguation - TV episodes:
Show Name - S01E01 - Episode Title.ext— the SxxExx format is what Plex looks for - Multi-episode files:
Show Name - S01E01-E02.extorShow Name - S01E01E02.ext - Specials:
Show Name - S00E01 - Special Title.ext— Season 00 is for specials
What to avoid:
- Release group tags:
[YTS.MX],-RARBG— these confuse the scanner - Quality tags in the name:
1080p.BluRay.x264— Plex reads this from the file itself - Dots instead of spaces:
The.Dark.Knight.2008— Plex handles this but spaces are cleaner
Subtitle Files
External subtitles should be named to match the video file:
Movie Name (2024).mkv Movie Name (2024).en.srt # English subtitles Movie Name (2024).es.srt # Spanish subtitles Movie Name (2024).en.forced.srt # English forced (foreign parts only) Movie Name (2024).en.sdh.srt # English SDH (hearing impaired)
Use ISO 639-1 language codes (en, es, fr, de, ja, etc.).
Extras and Behind-the-Scenes
Plex supports extras in dedicated subfolders:
/Movie Name (2024)
Movie Name (2024).mkv
/Behind The Scenes
Making Of.mkv
/Deleted Scenes
Alternate Ending.mkv
/Trailers
Official Trailer.mkv
The .plexignore File
Create a .plexignore file in any library folder to exclude files from scanning:
*.nfo *.txt Sample* *-sample.*
This prevents Plex from picking up NFO files, sample clips, and other junk that torrent downloads often include.
Fixing Mismatched Media
When Plex matches a movie to the wrong title:
- Click the movie → … → Fix Match
- Search by the correct title and year
- Select the right match from the results
- If it’s still wrong, try adding the TMDB or IMDB ID to your folder name:
Movie Name (2024) {tmdb-12345}
Collections vs. Libraries
Don’t create separate libraries for genres or franchises. Use Plex Collections instead:
- Libraries = content types (Movies, TV Shows, Music, Photos)
- Collections = groupings within a library (MCU, Star Wars, Pixar, Best of 2024)
Collections can be auto-generated by Plex based on metadata, or manually curated. They show up as browsable rows in your library — like Netflix categories.
