Subtitle Handling — The Hidden Performance Killer

The #1 cause of unexpected transcoding in both Plex and Jellyfin: subtitles. PGS and ASS/SSA subtitles are image-based — they can’t be overlaid in software, so they must be burned into the video. This forces a full transcode even if the client could otherwise direct-play the video.
